In 2002, nestled in a small workshop within a rundown former fruit and veg shop on Newland Avenue, Hull, Recycling Unlimited sprang to life. Mr. Eddie Brooks, driven to aid individuals recovering from mental health setbacks to return to work, ignited the charity with a simple yet powerful concept. Salvaging industrial pallets, destined to languish in landfills, they meticulously stripped and cleaned these, crafting garden furniture from the reclaimed timber.
As the years passed, the charity grew wings, expanding its endeavours beyond furniture. It embraced second-hand household goods, participated in multicultural open days and parades, and nurtured three city farms while steadfastly fostering its core—the joinery workshop.
Following Eddie's passing in 2017, his eldest son, Rick Brooks, steered Recycling Unlimited (Turning Corners) back to its essence. Shedding shops and relinquishing a city farm to the users, the focus zeroed in on the workshop while birthing a factory outlet shop.
In 2022, we moved to our new site within the grounds of Active+ on Harpings Road. Opening our doors wide on the 1st of April that year marked a significant milestone.
December 2023 signified another momentous shift, with the charity embarked on a profound transformation, embracing 'Turning Corners' as its fresh trading and brand identity. This monumental change embodies the essence of 'turning a corner,' signifying the pivotal juncture where progress begins-a poignant symbol of recovery. Additionally, the name resonates with the hands-on craft of woodworking in the workshop, encapsulating both the physical act of crafting wood and the personal journey towards growth and renewal.
This rebranding wasn't solely about a name change; it was fortified by a powerful strapline, "Work with your hands, heal your mind." This synergy signifies the therapeutic connection between manual work and mental well-being, emphasising the profound impact of engaging in craftsmanship on one's emotional and psychological health.
Today, we stand firmly established and fully immersed in our purpose, thriving in our new home.
